Our story

We believe in the healing power of story to create a more vibrant,
interconnected and peaceful world.

WithOurVoice was incorporated in 2006, just after Children at the Well Youth Storytelling launched, to ensure the youth program’s continued support. Children at the Well had grown from the Interfaith Story Circle, an initiative Gert Johnson, a retired teacher, began in 1993. In her years in the classroom at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady NY, Gert had found storytelling to be a powerful teaching tool, and she wanted to draw young people to join with adults in creating community across religious differences, through storytelling. Gert founded Children at the Well together with Paula Weiss, also a former educator, with funds from the National Storytelling Network's Brimstone Award, won for their proposal for this youth storytelling program.

Over the years, as the youth program’s initial focus on interfaith shifted to a broader approach to identity formation, it began to make sense for the two programs, Children at the Well and Interfaith Story Circle, to operate independently. Today, Children at the Well still deliberately brings together young people from a variety of cultures, but telling stories from their religions is only one of many options participants have.

To inspire others to start similar programs elsewhere, in 2018 WithOurVoice published Our Stories Connect: Creating Youth Storytelling Programs to Raise Confident, Compassionate and Capable Leaders. The book can be purchased on Amazon. A Story Coach Training program was piloted in 2024 to teach educators at heart the Children at the Well method of story coaching and involve them in the program. And in 2025/2026 we plan to launch Power Tellers, based on the Children at the Well model and designed for use in schools and in afterschool and recreational programs.
